The Legend of Russian Jazz Plays Host to the Second International “Baltic JaZZ” Festival

The St.Petersburg State Philharmonic of Jazz Music was founded by the outstanding jazz musician David Goloshchekin, People’s Artist of Russia, in 1989. The opening of the Philharmonic of Jazz Music in the city was a notable event in the history of world jazz. From its very inception it has been financed by the state, which is an unprecedented phenomenon in the world jazz concert practice. But the emergence of this philharmonic in St. Petersburg was a quite natural phenomenon. It was here, in this historical centre of Russian culture, that Russian jazz came into being back in the 1920s. By the end of the 1980s jazz culture in St. Petersburg was represented by the Leningrad Dixieland Band and the Goloshchekin ensemble. They became the nucleus of the jazz philharmonic, and David Goloshchekin its artistic director. St. Petersburg jazz gained high reputation.

The hall of the St. Petersburg Jazz Philharmonic heard and saw such stars of world jazz as David Baker, Richi Kowl, Eddie Gomez, Herb Geller, Benny Golson, Monty Alexander, Wynton Marsalis, and many other outstanding musicians. One of the halls of the Jazz Philharmonic has been named the “Ellington Hall”, in honour of the meeting and joint concert of Duke Ellington and David Goloshchekin in Leningrad in 1971, which was described by the great Edward Kennedy Ellington in his book of reminiscences.

“Beauty will save the world. It was not said by me, but I believe in it. I work in the name of beauty. The purport of my life and work is constantly to search for and find this beauty, and bring it to people so that they might see, feel and accept it. Beauty is like religion. I am not a religious person, but the magnificent beauty of a cathedral, the solemn grandeur of religious rites and services make a certain impact on the state of mind and soul, make one stop and think of many things and come again and again, voluntarily, of course. The same is with art. One should come to it voluntarily, and begin to understand and love it. This is why I don’t persuade anyone to love jazz, and wouldn’t do it even if I had such an opportunity. Let people come quite by chance, hear jazz, and after that think of it…”
From an interview given by David Goloshchekin to Nezavisimaya Gazeta

The Jazz Philharmonic hall has excellent acoustic qualities and exquisite interior decoration. There is also a bar of the European standard and a restaurant with an original jazz menu (cold and hot dishes are served during an interval or after the concert).
