The «BALTIC JAZZ» Festival has become a tradition. Its history includes three Russian-Norwegian jazz festivals and the First International Festival «Baltic Jazz» which was held in Moscow last year with great success. The festival has become an interesting event in the big world of music.
Jazz is music for intellectuals, for people with a more than average income. They regard jazz music part of their perception of the world, one of the foundations of their philosophy of life, a life style, and an impetus to positive emotions.
These people can be black or white, Europeans or Americans, young and immature or old and wise, men or women, professionals or students — the jazz medium is wonderfully democratic.
Jazz has traversed a long and arduous path — from honky-tonk joints and river vessels in New Orleans to spectacular prestigious concert halls. Created by the descendants of slaves, jazz has always been striving to maximal freedom. More and more people wanted to hear jazz, and the number of those who liked it grew with every passing year. The universal character of jazz gave rise to various styles of its music. Moreover, there is hardly any style of modern music which has not taken something from jazz. Well-known composers whose works are considered masterpieces of modern music have taken certain elements from jazz. Today jazz is a real breakthrough in the entire musical culture. Jazz has demonstrated its significance and gained worldwide recognition.
Jazz improvisation is a way to express oneself through music. It is a special kind of art demonstrating the natural gift of the performer. Improvisation is one of the brightest and most impressive methods of self-expression. It requires a high level of virtuosity and, of course, great talent of the performer. Every sound is full of feelings, thoughts and ideas.
Today PLANETA ART presents a phenomenon of world recognition in the realm of music. This is an event for the intellectual public of high society who will never exchange live sound for a system of digits and who highly values free and easy improvisation in music.
Rules should not be created, but boundaries can be changed. And «Baltic Jazz» expands its boundaries for such public. This year the Kaliningrad State Philharmonic Society, the Jazz Philharmonic of David Goloshekin in St. Petersburg and the Moscow International House of Music will throw their doors wide open for the guests of and participants in the Festival.
It will last six days and there will be more than twenty-four hours of breath-taking improvisation. This will be presented by star musicians widely known in Europe and the world who have the wonderful gift of showing the inexhaustible possibilities of Jazz, the great and mystical art of improvisation.
